DINNER WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A HUGE AFFAIR.

Dad arranged for a seafood buffet that included some of my favorites, like lobster, crab legs, scallops and fettuccine Alfredo. Griffin’s family was floored by the spread, gushing and making happy gasping noises, but I understood it was for my benefit.

“I’m going to eat my weight in lobster!” I rubbed my hands together and performed a giddy little dance. “This is going to be awesome.”

Dad’s smile was fond as he stroked the back of my head and gave me a quick kiss on the temple. “I thought you’d enjoy it. There’s blueberry and blackberry pie for dessert.”

“Awesome!” I continued swaying my hips as I pumped my fist in the air. “This is, like, the best day ever.”

“That’s not what you said a few hours ago.”

I refused to let him bring me down. “Things change. In fact ... .” I studied the dining room setup through the open door as my brothers and Griffin poured drinks for the Taylors in the parlor. “I’m going to run upstairs and change my shirt. Seafood is bound to be messy and I don’t want to stain this one.”

“You should’ve bought those bibs, Dad,” Braden drawled, adopting his “I’m going to annoy Aisling” voice and setting my teeth on edge. “That way Aisling would’ve been fully covered for dinner.”

Dad was horrified. “Adult bibs are never allowed in this house.”

“I think you’re missing out on a great idea,” Cillian teased.

“And I think I need another drink.”

I left my family to mingle with Griffin’s and took the stairs two at a time to my old room — which looked to be my current room again, for the foreseeable future — and pulled up short when I found my mother standing in the open doorway. She stared into the room, as if looking at something only she could see, and she appeared lost in thought.

“Do you need something?” I tried to keep the accusation from my tone, but it wasn’t easy.

“What?” Mom shifted her eyes to me and smiled. “Oh, Aisling, I didn’t see you standing there. I was just looking around.”

Suspicion wrapped itself around my heart and gave a vicious squeeze. “Why were you looking around when you knew we were downstairs?”

“The Taylors are nice people, but I miss our quiet family time.”

“Right.” I strolled past her and headed into the room. “I’m changing into an older shirt because Dad is having a seafood bar. I think it’s going to be messy.”

Mom chuckled, low and throaty. “I take it he’s spoiling the crap out of you this week.”

“He’s spoiled the crap out of me my entire life. I like it that way.”

“You always were a daddy’s girl.”

I stilled as I pulled a T-shirt from the dresser drawer. She sounded whimsical, wistful even. That didn’t mean I trusted her.

“Why did you have one of the storm discs?” I blurted out the question without thinking about ramifications. The time was long past for playing coy. I didn’t trust her. There was a reason for that.
